Job Summary

The Marketing Coordinator, supported by the staff and volunteers, is responsible for the overall coordination of the tasks and activities required for developing a marketing plan for an annual conference and new services and products.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Liaise with appropriate staff and committees

2) Report to the Communications Coordinator

3) Assist in conference preparation

4) Develop and implement marketing plan for the company’s services, products and conferences

Specific Areas of Responsibility:

1. Committee Support : Attend committee meetings, follow up on tasks and send notices for upcoming meetings.

2. Communication: Handle and refer to the communications coordinator all media and general public requests for information.

3. Marketing: Develop and implement a marketing plan for the conference, new products and services. Identify the target audience, compile a mailing lists and contribute to the creation of marketing material.

4. Undertakes special projects and other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

1) Good level of spoken and written English

2) Degree in marketing or communication or equivalent

3) Good interpersonal skills, team player

4) Previous experience is an asset

Summer-job in Vancouver

Julien is one of 184 lucky French youths who got the so called “Summer Job Visa” this year. This visa allows French citizens between 18 and 35 to work in Canada between May 1st and September 30th. Julien’s job was pre-arranged through WISH Canada because applicants need a job-offer from a Canadian employer to get this visa. Julien passed a phone-interview with the manager of a store which sells artwork made by the hands of native artists from right here in Canada. As there are a lot of tourists from around the world coming to this store, Julien gets a chance to speak English, French, and German. It seems like he’s having a good time:

Arthur from Brazil used our Work & Study Program to full capacity: First he studied Business English at an ESL-school in Toronto for 7 months, then he came to Vancouver to study for 2 more months and now he works at Blenz Coffee in the heart of downtown Vancouver for 7 more months to use his English skills in a real working-environment, to gain some work-experience abroad and – of course – to earn some money!

“Celebration of Light” der besonderen Art

Dieses Jahr fand am zweiten Veranstaltungstag der “Celebration of Light’ (http://celebration-of-light.com/) ein besonderes Himmelspektakel statt: Zusätzlich zum Feuerwerk, das an diesem Abend von Südafrika organisiert wurde, gab es ein heftiges Sommergewitter, das tausende von Zuschauer über dem Himmel Vancouvers beobachten konnten.

Kein Wunder, dass das Feuerwerk dabei zur Nebensache wurde:

From an unpaid intern to a paid supervisor

Denzel from the Philippines got an internship as an unpaid intern at the boutique hotel L’Hermitage. Only 3 weeks after he has started working as a housekeeper, the hotel-management offered him the position of an unpaid supervisor. He must have done a good job because now he got hired as a supervisor. Here’s what he told us one week before the end of his regular internship:

“My internship is great so far. I get to know how this job in a real situation or real life works. I also learn how to deal with things which you cannot learn at school or by text book.

What I liked best about the job was being a houseman. I learned how to deal with all the calls from guests, which I had to forward to my supervisor, to the housekeepers and to other departments. I like being busy and running from floor to floor, so I really enjoyed being a housekeeper – it means working fast but also neat and clean. After 3 weeks I got the position of a supervisor in the housekeeping-department, so now I learn how the hotel works in the back of the house operation and how to inspect or release a room to make sure the guests enjoy their stay and we can exceed their expectations.

All my coworkers are friendly and very professional. Actually for this hotel my experience is that they’re all good team-players and everybody has some responsibility for everybody and everything.

Sometimes there was some miscommunication but that’s life! It requires some hassle and becomes a positive experience when it’s getting corrected.

I really learned a lot about the hotel-industry, especially about the back of the house operation, which was the focus of my internship program. It gave me more awareness and understanding how to cooperate between the back of the house and the front of the house operation. Also how to deal with things in the housekeeping department which is very different to other departments.

This internship also gave me the possibility of handling people from all around the world which I haven’t learned in my previous jobs. I guess they were quite happy with my performance because I got a job-offer and will work as a supervisor after my unpaid internship.”

Information about HTM – Hospitality & Tourism Management with PAID internship

This program in Hospitality and Tourism Management enables students to customize their career experience in order to suit their interests and talents and to prepare them for a successful career training and employment in the hospitality and tourism sector. Our program will successfully prepare students to enter this field with confidence. Students will be challenged by the curriculum which covers the essential topics and skills necessary for employment success. Academic study is delivered through the Sprott-Shaw Community College International Language Center; course contents are below.

A co-op placement is provided by WISH’s Vancouver office. While you will be attending the classes for the academic component of this program, WISH will provide you with an orientation session, an initial consultation, a placement search, an interview preparation, an interview arrangement, as well as an on going follow up throughout the work experience component of the program. Placement is available in Vancouver city & resort. Resort placement offer staff housing at cheaper cost than Vancouver placement.

After completing successfully the work experience component, the student will earn about $9 to $12 an hour and will be paid every two weeks and wage stated here is Gross amount before tax.
